Hurricane season home checklist for Jacksonville
A simple hurricane prep checklist for Jacksonville homes: what to do before June, before a storm, and after it passes.
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Jacksonville doesn't get hit often, but tropical storms bring wind, flooding and power outages almost every year. A little prep goes a long way.
Before the season
- Know your evacuation zone on the City of Jacksonville or your county's website
- Test smoke and CO alarms and swap batteries
- Pressure wash and clear gutters and drains so water flows away
- Photograph each room for insurance
- Check that patio furniture and grills can be stored quickly
When a storm is coming
- Bring in patio furniture, planters and anything that can blow around
- Charge phones, power banks and flashlights
- Move TVs and electronics away from windows
- Fill the car's tank and get cash
After it passes
- Stay clear of downed power lines and report them
- Photograph any damage before cleaning up
- Check for water around outlets and appliances before using them
