How high should you mount a TV?
The right TV mounting height for living rooms, bedrooms and over fireplaces, with simple measurements you can use today.
For most living rooms, the center of the screen should be about at eye level when you're sitting down. That usually means the center of the TV ends up 42 to 48 inches off the floor.
A quick way to find your height
- Sit where you usually watch
Have someone measure from the floor to your eyes. That's your target center height.
- Find the TV's center
Measure the TV's height and divide by two.
- Mark it on the wall
Put a strip of painter's tape at the center height and live with it for a day before drilling.
Bedrooms
When you watch lying down, a little higher is more comfortable. A slight downward tilt helps.
Over a fireplace
Fireplace mounts end up higher than ideal. A tilting mount, or a pull-down mount that brings the screen to eye level, makes a big difference for your neck. Check that the wall above the fireplace doesn't get hot.
How far to sit
For a 4K TV, sitting about 1 to 1.5 times the screen size away works well. For a 65 inch TV, that's roughly 5.5 to 8 feet.
